Gritty, grainy, grungy textures are my favourite type of design asset for roughing up your clean digital artwork to give it an old, worn, and distressed appearance. Because grungy textures are sourced from real dirty surfaces, there’s an infinite supply of resources, each one with its own unique style. In today’s roundup post I collate 60 of the best grit, grain, and grunge texture packs out there, including both free downloads and high quality texture pack products.
Light leaks were once an unwanted flaw when shooting with low quality analogue cameras, but now the colourful diffusions are a popular addition to modern digital photos to give them a nostalgic, retro look. My free set of light leak photo overlays contains 15 high-resolution 3000x2000px, 300ppi graphics that you can paste over your photograph using any image editing software that supports blending modes. By changing the layer to Screen, the black background is rendered transparent to enhance your image with colourful highlights.
Access All Areas members have a great collection of vector textures to download this week, courtesy of GhostlyPixels. These 10 Wood Grit Distortions feature a variety of finely detailed textures, isolated with transparent backgrounds. Each texture is supplied as infinitely scalable AI & EPS files, as well as huge 8000x6000px PNG images, making them extremely versatile assets you can use as backgrounds or within layer masks to create all kinds of bold texturing effects.
Give your digital designs the look of a real printed poster with my collection of folds and creases textures. These textures feature detailed damage lines from the paper being folded and crumpled, with several options to simulate a page that has been folded in half, in thirds, roll folded, or just creased. They are ideal for making your poster art look like retro prints, adding some wear and tear to leaflet artwork, or giving a map design an antique appearance.
Download my new pack of textures to add detailed wood grain effects to your designs. After processing each photograph of wooden paneling to straighten and equalize the texture, the wood grain pattern was then extracted and exported as PNG files with transparent backgrounds. These PNG files preserve the details of the grain and make it easy to place the textures over your artwork. Use them to create rustic effects by using them as backgrounds, overlays, or within layer masks.
I have created plenty of brushes and textures based on halftone dots previously on Spoon Graphics, but halftone lines are a fantastic alternative pattern that can add detailed retro effects to your artwork. This new collection of halftone lines textures features 10 high-resolution graphics with a distressed appearance, made of evenly spaced diagonal lines at a 45-degree angle. The halftone screens were generated from heavily decayed texture images, so each pattern is unique with an array of line widths. Every texture is supplied as a standard JPG and PNG file with a transparent background for maximum versatility and compatibility with all kinds of image editing applications.
