Selective Color Photo Effect in Photoshop

In today’s Adobe Photoshop video tutorial I’m going to show you how to create a popular photo effect that goes by many names, including selective colour photography, spot colour photography, colour isolation photography, partial colour photography, colour splash photography, colour accent photography and many many more! No matter what you want to call it, it’s where a photograph is converted to black and white with a single colour preserved to highlight specific areas.

  1. I love almost all of the content on this site and appreciate the free material you provide to us. However, this technique should never be taught. If taught, people then think it’s OK to use spot-color in their photography. But it isn’t. It is one of the most over-used, cliched techniques still making its rounds. I couldn’t think of a better way to shoot yourself in the foot with an art director than having spot-color photos in your portfolio. Please think of all the harm you are doing by posting this! :)

(while I”m not really upset by this, I think you might want to seriously consider adding a disclaimer to the post about the overuse of said technique and to be VERY sure that it is what your employer/client really really really want – after you’ve spent the morning trying to convince them otherwise)

  2. While I have seen this effect a lot, adding the overall tweeking, like the split-toning, really added A LOT!
    Thank you!
