My Top 10 Most Popular Tutorials from 2023

2023 is coming to an end, so let’s take a look back at my tutorial videos from the past year and see which topics proved to be the most popular. My Neon effect Photoshop tutorial from a couple of years ago has continued to dominate as my top piece of content, gaining another 500,000 views to increase its total view count to 2.6 million views since it was published. Interestingly, my number one my popular upload this year saw an extremely negative reaction when it was first uploaded and was by far my most disliked video, but it has since gone on to become one of my best performing videos.

Retro Striped Text Effect Photoshop Tutorial

Over the years I’ve shared several tutorials showing how to create retro text effects mostly using Adobe Illustrator, so today I thought I’d mix things up and show some techniques for creating retro striped text effects with a 70s vibe using tools in Photoshop. Photoshop’s Layer Style tools are the natural place to start, but as we’ll discover they don’t quite cut it. Instead, we’ll make use of the ‘Step and Repeat’ trick to generate an extended drop shadow effect that can then be divided up into coloured stripes. This kind of retro text effect is ideal for creating T-shirt designs, so stick around until the end to see how my ‘Washed & Worn’ textures pack can easily make your artwork look like an old cracked T-shirt print.

Photoshop Tutorial: ‘Pixel Sorting’ Stretched Pixel Glitch Art Effect

In today’s Photoshop tutorial I’m going to show you how to create an abstract piece of artwork using the pixel sorting effect, where coloured pixels of an image are stretched to create a detailed visual effect. Authentic pixel sorting is a type of glitch art that is usually generated by computer code, but we’ll be replicating the appearance with Photoshop’s built-in filters. If you search for pixel sorting artwork on sites such as Pinterest you’ll see some great examples of this art style where the effect is combined with photographs, usually with these extended pixels creating a melting or drooping appearance, or totally replacing a subject’s entire face to create a surreal image. That’s exactly what we’ll be producing in this tutorial, an abstract art piece that features a hooded figure with long glitchy pixels that extend vertically from his face.

My Top 10 Most Popular Video Tutorials from 2018

2019 is just around the corner, so it’s that time of year when I look back at the last 12 months of uploads to my Spoon Graphics YouTube Channel and share my top 10 most popular video tutorials from 2018. Channel stats on the whole are down slightly from last year, by between 15-30% in Views and Subscriber growth. This time last year I’d just about reached 200,000 subscribers, and almost a year on I’m almost at 250,000. It’s not quite the explosion from 100,000-200,000 in 2017, but it’s nice to know my channel is still steadily growing. Here’s an overview of my best performing uploads. Which ones were your favourite?

Daguerreotype Vintage Photo Effect

In today’s Photoshop tutorial I’m going to show you how to create a vintage photo effect, based on Daguerreotypes from the 1800s. Being the most common photography method in the 19th century, this photo style is often associated with old portraits and scenes of the wild west. Daguerreotypes were exposed onto polished metal plates which were easily tarnished and scratched. This has become one of the main aesthetics of these antique images, so we’ll be using some texture images to mimic the appearance. And to achieve the most realism, we’ll be using the real thing! I recently found some public domain scans of authentic Daguerreotype photographs, which I processed into design resources by Photoshopping out the subject to leave just the texture of the tarnished metal plate.
